In Brief This Week: UMass Chan Medical School, Riaan Research Initiative, Abu Dhabi DoH, CHOP

NEW YORK – UMass Chan Medical School this week said it has received a $2.2 million donation from the Riaan Research Initiative, a nonprofit patient advocacy group founded by the parents of a child with Cockayne syndrome, to support development of a gene therapy for this rare genetic disorder. The $2.2 million gift will be used to contract with Andelyn Biosciences, a contract development and manufacturing organization, to manufacture an adeno-associated virus serotype 9 vector that will be used within the gene therapy.

Abu Dhabi's Department of Health and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) this week signed a memorandum of understanding focused on advancing research in pediatric oncology and cell and gene therapy. The collaboration is aimed at enhancing research capabilities, improving disease management, and advancing training for healthcare professionals. CHOP and the Department of Health will establish an exchange of faculty, researchers, students, and online learning opportunities.
