NEW YORK — The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center said on Thursday that it has received a $78 million donation to support its precision oncology efforts.
The money, provided by Stuart and Molly Sloan, will be used to establish a new institute for precision oncology research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, as well as recruit a scientific leader for the institute, create an endowed chair, and fund postdoctoral fellowships, sequencing projects, and other programs. It will also be used for a new research building at the cancer center.
The donation comes on the heels of the merger of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance into the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center earlier this year.
"With recent developments, we have the scientific tools and expertise to expand precision oncology to more patients," Thomas Lynch, president and director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, said in a statement. "This contribution also allows us to expand our lab space, which will then drive innovation and discovery at [the center] for the next 20 to 30 years."
